The Right Sand for the Job
The wrong sand can cost you time, effort and results. If it doesn’t drain right, compact well or hold where it should, it can throw off everything from paving to turf prep. That’s why we supply a range of washed sands fit for purpose — and we’ll help you choose the right one from the start.

What’s the difference between washed sand and brickie sand?
Washed sand is clean, fine and free from clay, making it ideal for paving, turf underlay, rendering and drainage. It’s filtered to remove impurities, giving it a smooth, consistent finish. Brickie sand, on the other hand, contains clay, which gives it a stickier texture — perfect for bricklaying and mortar mixes. It holds shape well and helps create strong, lasting bonds between bricks. In short: washed sand is great for finishing and drainage, brickie sand is better for structural mortar work.
How much sand do I need for paving or turf prep?
For paving, you’ll generally need a 30–50mm layer of washed sand. For turf underlay, aim for around 50–100mm depending on your base. To calculate volume, multiply your area (in square metres) by your required depth (in metres). For example, 10m² at 50mm depth = 0.5m³ of sand. Don’t forget to allow for compaction — add 10–15% extra just in case. If you’re working with uneven ground, it’s always better to round up than run short mid-job.
Can I mix different sand types for specific jobs?
In some cases, yes — mixing sand types can improve performance. For example, you might blend washed sand with topsoil for better drainage in garden beds, or use a bit of brickie sand in paving to improve cohesion on sloped ground. But for structural jobs like mortar or concrete, stick to the recommended type to avoid weakening the mix. Mixing should be purposeful — only combine sands when you know it won’t affect strength, compaction or finish. If unsure, ask before you blend.
