What lawn care products are best for starting new turf?
For new turf, start with a good-quality turf underlay or soil blend to give roots the best chance to establish. Apply a starter fertiliser that’s high in phosphorus to encourage strong root development. After laying, use a lawn roller to press the turf into the soil and water thoroughly. Avoid heavy traffic for the first few weeks and keep the area moist until roots take hold. Products like slow-release fertilisers and wetting agents can also help maintain early growth and reduce stress on new turf.
What weed or pest treatments do you recommend?
The best weed or pest treatment depends on your lawn type and the specific issue. For broadleaf weeds, selective herbicides are effective without damaging your grass. For pests like armyworm or curl grubs, look for targeted lawn insecticides or biological treatments. Always check that the product is suitable for your grass variety (e.g. buffalo, couch, kikuyu). Preventative lawn care — like proper mowing, watering and aeration — goes a long way toward keeping weeds and pests at bay without over-reliance on chemicals.
How often should I apply fertiliser or soil conditioner?
Fertiliser should typically be applied every 6–8 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) using a balanced, slow-release lawn fertiliser. Soil conditioners, like gypsum or organic blends, can be added 2–3 times a year to improve structure and nutrient uptake, especially in clay-heavy or compacted soils. Always water in well after applying either product and avoid fertilising in extreme heat or drought. If you’re not sure what your lawn needs, a soil test or visual assessment can help guide the timing.
