How do I choose the right tools for different cement jobs?
Choosing the right tools depends on the type of cement work you’re doing. For mixing, you’ll need a sturdy wheelbarrow, mixing tray or cement mixer. For placement and finishing, use a trowel, float, edger and screed board. A brick saw is handy for cutting pavers or blocks, and a spirit level ensures everything stays even. For larger jobs, a compactor or wacker packer may be needed to prep the base. Matching tools to the scale and complexity of the job helps ensure a cleaner, faster finish.
What oxide colours are available for cement?
Cement oxides come in a range of colours, with popular options including black, red, brown, yellow and charcoal. These powdered pigments are mixed into the cement or mortar to tint it throughout, giving a consistent, long-lasting colour. Some oxides can be blended to create custom shades. When choosing a colour, consider the surrounding materials and finish — darker tones tend to hide stains better, while lighter colours brighten up paved areas. Always follow mixing ratios to avoid streaking or uneven tones.
Can you add oxides to any type of cement mix?
Oxides can be added to most cement mixes, but it’s important to choose the right type and quantity for the job. Iron oxide pigments work well in standard cement, mortar, render and concrete blends, giving consistent colour when mixed correctly. However, not all mixes will take pigment evenly — high-clay or pre-coloured mixes can affect how the oxide sets. Always follow the recommended dosage (usually 5–10% of cement weight) and mix thoroughly to avoid patchiness. Test small batches first if you’re unsure how a particular blend will react.
