Is organic compost safe for edible gardens?
Most composts designed for home and landscaping use are organic and safe for edible gardens, but it’s always best to double-check the product details. Quality compost should be free from harmful chemicals, pathogens or synthetic additives, making it suitable for vegetables, herbs and fruit trees. If you’re growing food, look for compost that’s certified organic or clearly marked as safe for edible use. When in doubt, ask your supplier to confirm the source and composition.
How much compost should I use per square metre?
For most garden beds, apply compost at a depth of around 50–100mm. That’s roughly 0.05 to 0.1 cubic metres per square metre. Mix it into the top 100–150mm of soil to improve structure, moisture retention and nutrient levels. For new beds or poor soil, aim for the higher end. For established gardens, a thin layer worked in or used as top-dressing is often enough. Always adjust based on your soil condition and plant type.
Can compost be mixed directly with existing soil?
Yes — compost is most effective when mixed directly with your existing soil. This helps improve texture, drainage, water retention and nutrient content. Dig it into the top 100–200mm of soil before planting. You can also mix compost with other materials like topsoil or sand, depending on your plant needs. Avoid planting directly into 100% compost, as it can be too rich or hold too much moisture on its own. Blending gives better long-term results.
